right now there’s this decision (again) whether to keep old stuff or to get rid of it. in my case it’s even worse because i play different instruments, so i have rooms full of drumstuff, bass- and guitarstuff, keyboardstuff, vocalstuff etc. i once swore to never sell any piece of gear whatsoever because i thought i would regret it some day. but there comes this point, and i’m sure some of you know this, when there is just too much stuff. now, what to lose? ok, i’d never lose instruments i love. but should i keep an instrument just because it might become expensive one day? and how expensive can it get? is it worth it to move it around year after year, stuff it in this room, then in that one and so forth if you’re not playing it anymore? and would you lose it at all? maybe in ten years you think ‘hey, if i wait another ten years….’
maybe it’s the right way to say, if i haven’t used it in a certain period of time, then it has to go. but then there’s the possibility of the perfect moment for exactly this piece of gear and AAAAAARRRRGGH it’s gone. i already sold one guitar in the last few weeks and i don’t even miss it although i used to like it very much years ago. so this was a good decision. but the next one is a lot harder. i’m gonna sell another guitar, something special, but i never kind of bonded with it. everybody into guitars that saw it said ‘wow, if i had it…’ well, i said the same thing 16 years or so ago – then i bought it, then i had it, i still have it…..but that’s it, it didn’t change my life. then again, i’m not such a great guitarist – maybe i just don’t have what it takes to deserve this beauty.
in a nutshell, it seems there is no one-size-fits-all-way to do this. i’m gonna decide for every single piece and hopefully won’t regret it in the future. but one thing i never believed until now: there is such a thing as too much gear.
